A trip to the perfect city of Thommaso Buzzi

Buzzi was a successful Milanese architect and interior designer, and was enchanted by the partially ruined site. He purchased it in 1957 and, subsequently, dedicated the rest of his life to the construction of his complex there. He restored what remained of the convent and built a large complex of buildings and theatres behind the convent mainly using stone from the convent ruins.

The artists who chose Todi

All of these local artists have established their own small Galleries and studios in high streets around Todi and are very generously accessible with their time to visit their studios and talk about their art. That is also a feature of the townsfolk of Todi generally. They welcome tourists openly and warmly, particularly those who are interested in Italian culture in all its forms.

The Painted House of Brian O’Doherty

In 1977, Brian and Barbara started painting the interior of the the house, and in so doing, creating an extraordinary work of art, now called Casa Dipinta (the “Painted House”). Brian and his wife have left the house and now, presumably, retired to their home in USA, and the Commune (Town Council) maintain the house which has become a museum attraction for art loving visitors.

Accommodation options in Todi – Spring and Autumn

Accommodation in Todi is plentiful. But Todi is a hill town like so many others in Italy it rises to a flat top and has ancient walled fortifications surrounding it. The area at the top falls away quite steeply so getting some accommodation at or near the top around the main piazza is something of a priority.

Beverly Pepper Sculpture Park

The Beverly Pepper Sculpture Park was opened in September 2019. Born in Brooklyn NY in 1920, Beverly Pepper moved to Todi were she spent many years until her death in 2017. Ms. Pepper, who had lived and worked principally in Italy since the 1950s, “today is one of the most serious and disciplined American artists of her generation,” the art critic Robert Hughes wrote in Time magazine in 1975.

Santa Maria della Consolazione

Santa Maria della Consolazione is below the town, near the edge of the 13th-century walls. It’s a large 16th-century church with four apses and a beautiful central cupola and is one of central Italy’s best Renaissance churches.

Theatro Communal di Todi
