Robert Kleinboonschate, Artist and Teacher

Robert’s realist painting style is born of a love of old Dutch masters. Having spent most of his adult life in remote Australian landscapes, he has developed a mastery of landscapes. Robert is also a skilled portrait painter.

Originally from the Netherlands and then Los Angeles USA, Robert Kleinboonschate’s parents brought the family of six to regional Australia where he grew up in a regional border town.

Robert has a 40 year career as an Australian artist and has an extensive exhibition history . After completing his studies at Swinburne Institute of Technology in 1981, he travelled to the Netherlands to study the Dutch masters for several years. On his return in 1983 he travelled “outback” to Central Australia to spend 11 years painting the Australian Landscape. After a second trip to the Netherlands that lasted two years he returned to Sydney in 1999 and then 5 years later settled in the country near his mother who lives in the town of his youth.

Robert is an engaging personality who continues to enjoy success as an exhibiting artist, teacher and arts collaborator. He has a strong affinity with the Australian bush and a loyalty to the local artists, his local gallery and his family.

Robert also has an encyclopaedic knowledge of technique and skills in Portraiture.

In August 2021 Robert exhibited 20 paintings in an exhibition in Todi titled Permanente / Transitorio. It was a resounding success for an Australian artist in Italy and resulted in wide recognition of his skill and aesthetic.

In May 2022, Robert held a class for Art Class Italy in the studio in Todi. Also a resounding success, it was well over subscribed and all those present had a wonderful time.

Art Class Description

Robert is a nurturing teacher with patience and a sense of fun that makes his classes easy work of both these genres and a joy for students of all levels. Students may choose to concentrate on one of these genres, rather than learn about both.

Robert’s class will be flexible. He will offer tuition in both Landscape and Portraiture, and students will have the choice to concentrate on one or both for two weeks. About the class in Todi, Robert says –

The first two days we can source imagery in the immediate locality and work in the studio to learn how to prepare and set up a composition. Then we will move on to ‘blocking in ‘ during which time I will assess the progress each student is making and give the appropriate feed - back to improve their skill and technique. On a fine day we can try to complete some small plein air sketches as a group and use this for further inspiration.

The Todi experience will be an important part of the learning experience with Robert who will teach participants “how to see with a painter’s eye”.

At the end of the workshop students may choose to exhibit one or more art works in an exhibition of completed art work by the whole class. Local artists and supporters of Art Class Italy will attend the exhibition with a commission payable on any sales going to the local gallery.
